Sniper Elite V2 isn't a sequel to Sniper Elite, but rather, a remake-this is Rebellion's second shot at getting their magnum marksman opus right. I can't say I wasn't warned about the game's more obscene aspects, but the box failed to warn me how viscerally disgusting it would be to watch a bullet shattering spines and tearing lungs to shreds, nor how distressing I would find it watching that kind of violence literally hundreds of times before the game was over. To quote the back of the game's box: "X-RAY KILL CAM see organs tear and burst, bones and teeth shatter, as your bullet passes through your enemy." It's what the game chooses to follow that trigger pull with that gives me such pause. In a profound way I'm happy that there's a game that allows me to crawl through the rubble of a war-torn Berlin, find a German officer with my binoculars, sight down my rifle's scope (also adjusting for bullet drop and windage) before pulling the trigger and ensuring a villain's death. It's rare to give a positive review to a game that repulsed me, so Sniper Elite V2 has put me into somewhat of an awkward position. WTF And then the bullet plowed through his head, popping his eyeball before blasting off the back of his skull! (Repeat 100 times.) But if you haven't, and you'd like to shoot people while being sneaky, Sniper Elite V2 Remastered is a challenging and rewarding chance to kill some Nazis who aren't paying attention.LOW Are those tank guns manned by psychics? And since it doesn't add anything new, it's not worth buying if you've already played the original. Granted, even with all the added missions, this isn't as good as the far more varied Sniper Elite III or the even more compelling Sniper Elite 4.
It also expands the multiplayer modes to accommodate up to 16 players, adds multiplayer characters from the Zombie Army spin-off series, and includes all of the extra missions that were added later, including "Assassinate the Fuhrer," in which you get to gently place a bullet in Hitler's skull.
Along with a story-driven campaign you can play solo or with friends, this also boasts some online multiplayer modes (unless you play on Switch, in which case you can only play solo).Īs for what's new in this collection, aside from bringing it to the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Nintendo Switch for the first time, it also boasts fully upgraded graphics, including for people who have 4K TVs. Good thing you have a sniper rifle, a machine gun, a silenced pistol, and a lot of rocks you can toss to distract your enemies. To do so, you must use stealth, a variety of guns and explosives, and a lot of luck to infiltrate an area, locate the target, eliminate it, and get out without being shot yourself. Like the original, Sniper Elite V2 Remastered is a third-person shooter that tasks you with taking out high-value targets working on Germany's rocket program. For those who missed it the first time, this visually updated version of the 2012 World War II stealth action shooter is a sneaky good time.
